Creative Arts Therapy in Long Term Care
The creative arts therapies have been proven to benefit our seniors, whether it be Dance/Movement Therapy, Drama Therapy, Horticultural Therapy, Art Therapy, or Music Therapy.
In music therapy, seniors with dementia who hear music from their past have often responded in a positive way. They begin to recall past memories that may have been forgotten; and those memories and experiences may be tied to specific songs. Just like how a certain smell transports you back to a memory you have of nana's warm hugs, for instance.
Many of our seniors try to hum or sing along to songs they remember, and our caregivers have noticed that they seem more communicative and responsive, especially to questions and conversation.
